Romance Literatures

Doctoral degree in full-time or combined form. The language of instruction is Czech.

The programme can be studied as a single subject or as a single subject with a specialization (Intermedia and Intercultural Communication).

What will you learn?

The program Romance Literature focuses primarily Francophone, Hispanphone, Lusophone, Italian and Catalan Literatures. In addition the program offers the specialization in Intermedia and Intercultural Communication that opens the way to translation, interartistic and comparative studies.

The aim of this doctoral degree study programme is to prepare competent and highly qualified scholars in literary theory and in literary history and in at least two Romance literatures. Graduates acquire appropriate methodologies of scientific work and demonstrate the effectiveness of their acquired skills in the field of their research specialization.

Practical training

Practice is not a direct part of the curriculum, but can be a welcome addition to study. This concerns in particular practices in publishers, libraries, translation centers, public and private institutions, public and private companies.

Further information

Admission proceedings include a discussion upon the dissertation project that the applicant shall prepare and attach to his/her application for study. The project will include following items: topic, outline of hypothetical issues and methodological supports, primary and secondary literature.

Career opportunities

Graduates are prepared to enter research activities and occupations requiring highly specialized ability in criticism and literary reflection, especially in universities and research institutes at the international level.

Deadline for submitting applications: August 1 - November 30

Deadline for submitting documents for the admission procedure: December 15

Documents for the admission procedure:

  • signed CV;
  • list of publishing activities (if any);
  • doctoral thesis project
  • Documents for the admission procedure must be inserted into the e-application (rubric “Documents”) by 15 December. Applicants are required to include their full name and application number on all attached documents.

    The entrance examination takes the form of an oral discussion over the doctoral thesis project.

    Notice: A poof of completion of a Master’s degree programme (officially certified copy of the diploma, in the case of education obtained abroad also the so-called recognition) shall be submitted by the accepted applicants upon enrolment in the studies. For the entrance examination, a proof of completion of a Master’s degree programme is not required.

  • Pass/fail line: 70 points (out of 100).

Single-subject studies with specialization

In the single-subject studies, the student deepens knowledge in the concrete focus of the degree programme and chooses one specialization. The specialization is stated in the university diploma.
