Information for applicants
Forms of study
Doctoral studies are exclusively one-subject study programmes. The length of study of all study programmes is four years. Graduates of Doctoral degree study programmes are awarded an internationally recognised scientific degree of philosophiæ doctor (Ph.D.). The doctoral study represents the highest degree of university education.
Full-time and combined forms of study
It is possible to study in two ways. Full-time study means that your study duties are spread over the working days (Mon-Fri) according to your timetable. Full-time students participate in lectures, conferences, and educational and research activities of the workplace. The combined form of study is more often chosen by those applicants who have other responsibilities (e.g. employment or family) that do not allow them to attend classes daily.
Admission procedure
Only those applicants who have completed a Master’s degree study programme and obtained a corresponding academic title may be enrolled in the Doctoral degree study programme.
The admission procedure for Doctoral degree study programmes at the Faculty of Arts is usually held twice a year. To start the studies in the autumn semester, you can submit the application form from 1 February to 30 April; to start in the spring semester, from 1 September to 30 November.

The documents for the admission procedure must always be delivered in printed form to the following address: Admissions Office, Faculty of Arts, Arna Nováka 1, 602 00 Brno, no later than 14 days after the deadline for submitting the application.

- Other documents (see the specific requirements of the individual study programmes)
Entrance examination
The entrance examination for the Doctoral degree study programme takes the form of an oral interview. The examination board in general check:
- Applicant’s degree of readiness for scientific study
- Awareness of the main study directions of the relevant study programme
- Dissertation project
- Foreign language proficiency
The number of admitted applicants to the individual study programmes is set only indicatively and will be specified according to the current capacity of the individual departments and centres at the time of entrance examination.
Applicants with disabilities
Applicants with various types of disabilities are assisted in their preparation by the Centre for Assistance to Students with Special Needs – Teiresias.
The centre can offer assistance to people with sensory or physical disabilities, chronic illness, psychological difficulties, or specific learning disabilities. These people are offered various types of support: personal assistance, a range of aids, and counselling. In addition, there is a separate university study department.
